Self Designed & Built Model Steam Engine #3

I found a 2 1/2 pound weight at the scrap yard and it inspired me to try and build a model engine. I made a pattern for the base, cast it in aluminum, and machined the other parts. I made up the design as I went along. I was fun to figure it all out and I got more practice casting and using my lathe and mill.

@DrGoodwrench64 Thanks for the comment. Simple is always better. I wanted try out a different valve actuating method. and practice my metal casting skills. Mostly I did it just to have fun! I like to figure out how to build things instead of just buying a kit.

I love the simplicity of your design! There are so few parts I almost can’t believe it. But at this scale I guess there really isn’t a need for as many parts as the real thing. I bet it would look stunning if you used multiple engines configured in a radial pattern! That would look awesome!!!
What was it that drove you to build this thing in the first place? But, GREAT WORK for whatever reason that drove you to do it!!!

@becoming29 I am currently working on a model size one that is double acting. It will have a 2″ drive piston it will kind of be a big one for a model… If you are interested still in buying please let me know and I’ll post some vids and send you some pix or something… Kewl, hope you’re still interested…..

a simple yet remarkable invention the steam engine is.
parts don’t come in cheap, especially cause medal is not so abundant anymore.
i want to build one to power a house using multiple irrigation systems to provide filthy water to be cleaned by steam leading to the engine then to collect the used steam to contain as a drinking source. but i also plan to add a reserve for the amount needed maximum to power the engine at all times using a flooding container so in case of any shortage of rain water

  • hoppper26:

    i’ll buy it for 100

There is more time and effort in making one of these than you might think. The cost of a lathe and mill is not is not inexpensive, also.

Thanks for asking, but I’m much to lazy and would have to find another 2.5 weight disk!

Want to build one to sell? Very interested.
